Project Loved: Week of June 17th

by clayton

Project Loved is back with a fresh new set of candidates for the Loved category! Come check them out, and vote for your favourites!

Welcome back to Project Loved! This week's round of voting showcases some incredibly difficult beatmaps that are sure to give you a challenge. Across the four game modes, we've selected 28 maps, and now it's your turn to decide whether or not they will enter the Loved category. If a map has at least 75% positive votes for osu! or osu!taiko, or 80% for osu!catch or osu!mania, it'll make its way into the Loved beatmap listing!

Next week, these thresholds will be changing. osu! and osu!taiko will be increasing to 80%, following feedback that we've gotten from you! Both of these modes will also be cutting their candidate count down to five—Toy believes that this will ensure that all five candidates are strong picks, and it'll make sure that there's no shortage of awesome maps in the future.

I feel like I'm a broken record writing this in every post, but once again, we unfortunately don't have videos. Our old producer hasn't contacted us in a long time, so we're working with a new party to see if we can get those back!

Lastly, as a reminder in case you don't read the end of this post, be sure to submit suggestions for beatmaps to be added to Loved using the Google form! All of the nominated beatmaps are chosen from submissions on this form, which you can view in the corresponding Google sheet.

Let's get started!

osu!

nao - Toaru Shoukoku no Ohimesama by Settia
written by Kaifin

Toaru Shoukoku no Ohimesama is the quintessential Settia map, featuring ridiculous cross screen jumps overtop of a bombastic eroge song. If you aren't up to the challenge of the 8 star top difficulty, there are four lower diffs that vary in difficulty for you to enjoy! It's got some jumps, yo.

ave;new feat. Shirasawa Rie - MAYBE ROSY KISS -HARD dRESS STYLE- by [CSGA]Ar3sgice
written by Kaifin

MAYBE ROSY KISS is a classic alternator-style map by [CSGA]Ar3sgice, who you may know as the mapper of Satori De Pon! and other classics. Originally uploaded in 2014, the map features several patterns that were very ahead of their time, and the map remains a favourite among older age mappers and players, such as RLC and Regou. Will anyone FC? It might be possible.

utsuP - MiKUSABBATH by - Milhofo -, Haruaki and -Tochi
written by Kaifin

MiKUSABBATH is a fan favourite among players, with a massive 369 favourites at the time of writing due to its frenetic mapping and exciting song choice. First uploaded in 2014, the map has gone through several years of modding and has now been left without a scoreboard despite the praise it has received from the community. Will the mapper's hard work finally pay off through the advent of the Loved category?

Igorrr & Ruby My Dear - Figue Folle by Shrukaghn
written by Toy

Those of you familiar with Igorrr already know that the Baroquecore artist loves dialing up the creepiness factor to eleven. Along with Shrukaghn's spooky background, Figue Folle has the perfect combination of streams and kicksliders to make for a wonderfully enjoyable map. Two years and 189 favourites later, it has finally found its way into the Loved category!

omoi - Rasen hikou by Arieruco
written by Toy

Formerly known as Arieeru, Arieruco is not an unknown name to those who enjoy graveyarded maps. With 62 graved maps and an 1100+ favourite mapset of Snow Drive already in Loved, no introduction is needed for the level of quality Rasen hikou maintains. Having 155 favourites, 200BPM, and another omoi song, Rasen hikou can be considered a mini Snow Drive in a way. Fun jumps paired with some spaced streams come together for an incredibly popular mapset for those not quite at the level of Snow Drive.

Maffalda - Feliz Pascoa pra todos voces apesar de ninguem ter me mandado chocolates by Nhawak et al.
written by Toy

Another song from the ubiquitously popular Maffalda, known particularly for the mapset mononymously known as "Gangsta" by Mismagius, this mapset by fellow Brazilian mapper Nhawak features a wealth of guest difficulties from popular mappers. This completely Easter-themed map has racked up 166 favourites and manages to squeeze 7* worth of jumps in its 47-second drain time within the top difficulty. Feliz Páscoa!

Nanahira - Shinchoku Doudesu ka? by BarkingMadDog
written by Kaifin

BarkingMadDog is no stranger to both the Loved category and mapping Nanahira songs, but Shinchoku Doudesu ka is certainly one of his most notable maps. From the cross screen jumps to the somewhat questionable background, everything about this map is incredibly iconic and both a blast to watch as well as play. Be on the lookout for some impressive plays if this map makes it to the leaderboards!

Carpenter Brut - Anarchy Road by Voyen
written by Kaifin

Anarchy Road has been a staple of multiplayer lobbies since it was first uploaded in 2015, and it's quite easy to see why. The map is perfectly synchronized with the song in terms of intensity, starting off chill and eventually building to a huge peak in difficulty at the two-minute mark. With over 160 favourites, Anarchy Road is a community favourite and a clear choice for Loved.

Yousei Teikoku - Kyouki Chinden by Saten and OnosakiHito
written by Toy

Saten's style has become so distinct, that I'm sure anyone even remotely familiar with his style could point out one of his maps with their eyes closed. Kyouki Chinden is no exception, and whether you enjoy singletapping 280BPM or alternating 140BPM, this map fits exactly what you'd expect from a Saten Mirai Nikki mapset.

gmtn. (witch's slave) - disperagioia by DoKito
written by Toy

From the same artist that brought you furioso melodia, DoKito returns with one of my personal favourite maps of disperagioia. The all-around ominous background and bumping hardstyle track are paired with devilish spaced streams to create a very well put together 7.4* mapset. The 90 favourites it has amassed make it more than worthy to be featured within the Loved category.

osu!taiko

All osu!taiko descriptions were written by Gezoda

MuryokuP - Frozen World by c36098651 and Firce777

It's cold outside. Wonder why? Because this song is literally named Frozen World. It's a technical beatmap that will give you chills, and was featured in the osu!taiko World Cup 2015! Let's put things straight: it's a Firce777 map, whom a lot of osu!taiko players must have heard of at least once for winning a beatmapping contest, as well as making a ton of beatmaps that pro players have played, and has his own signature brutal difficulty name "Firce Force". This time around, he's made a fairly easy but still not free-to-FC beatmap that contains the usual tech things: 1/6 notes, some small 1/8 bursts and even one 1/12 burst near the end! And for you osu!mania players who seek some challenge, c36098651 made a difficulty that is much harder than in their ranked beatmapset!

MYTH & ROID - L.L.L. by Devli and yassu-

Brought to you by the band who made STYX HELIX, L.L.L. is the debut single of MYTH & ROID. And boy this song is great; you can tell that Devli and yassu- knew it well. Be prepared for streams and tech patterns for all 3:30 of the song; it's going to be one hell of a ride! But if you're not like these pro players, don't worry too much about it! This beatmap set provides every level of difficulty, so you can enjoy the song even if you are a newcomer. And to be very honest, even if I don't know who is in the background, I really like her... demons are the best things... (Note from post writer: Alright Gezo, I'm not sure we needed to know your preferences here)

Camellia - ANOMALY by Y O U T A

Hello fellow players, this is your captain. It appears Y O U T A is back to the pollings after a while to bring us the craziest insanity that no other player has ever se—wait, that's the wrong sheet! Anyway, ANOMALY is one hella radical beatmap that isn't going to kill you hard with wAcKy EfFeCtS. Expect purely technical patterns ending on blue ticks and some handswitches, both of these making you focus at all times. It may not be your usual tech map with lots of 1/6 or 1/8 notes, but if you run into it without knowing what it is... you might have a hard time. o7

LeaF - UR+ MusicEater LV99 by yuzu__rinrin and Backfire

Do we still have to present LeaF? The artist behind many of the popular BMS songs such as Aleph-0 or Calamity Fortune is no stranger to Loved. This time, we get one more song that lies on the border between breakcore and chiptune. The beatmap of this song, made by yuzu__rinrin, was featured in Taiko World Cup: Last Man Standing 3 and is a crazy speed beatmap with lots of tech patterns, 1/3 notes, and small 1/6 bursts. The "LMS Ver." difficulty is the one that was used in the tournament, while "UNLIMITED Oni" is the original difficulty. Both are very similar experiences, so I can only recommend playing both of them!

easyname - silly 300bpm thing by yea

This week, we are putting another map in redemption and this time, it is a silly 300BPM thing, an absurdly difficult speedtech map by yea. It's got 1/6 bursts, and 1/4 and 1/6 long sections that will just straight up kill you, even with the low HP that this map has to counterbalance the sheer difficulty. The easy difficulty gets rid of these to be more playable, but is still going to challenge anyone not ready for 300BPM streams. It's a very great beatmap that I personally recommend even if you don't think you can tackle the challenge, so go get it!

Nanahira - Kakinchu no Uta -More Charin Ver.- by aabc271 and ll-oscar

Coming straight from an era where storyboard gimmicks were starting to take off using crazy songs, Kakinchu no Uta is a much more tame song from the community's beloved singer, Nanahira. It introduces the gimmicks very neatly, slowly and is not too hard for people who begin in the storyboard gimmick world. Other introductions made in it are the usage of Hidden and HardRock mods within the beatmap. It's something I personally love both for the fact that it defies the trope of "crazy songs = gimmicks", and for the way it was made. Let's just say that aabc271 really outdid themselves!

t+pazolite - nekosogi Destruction by R i n g o

Here we go again! Nekosogi Destruction is a speed map that will fool you from its low star rating, but is going to be the biggest nightmare to anyone unprepared for the 280BPM. It may sound like I'm doing tons for something that easy, but you know the drill now, speed maps having low star rating and all. Anyway, as said previously, this beatmap is full-on speed, as opposed as the many technical beatmaps we are having right now. The patterning isn't so crazy, but coupled with the fact that 1/4 patterns are short and are weaved inside 1/2 notes, it will be much more demanding than your average beatmap. If you love speed maps as much as I do, want to improve your stamina or are training full-alternating, this is definitely something worth giving a go.

osu!catch

Camellia - gigadelic (Camellia's "The TERA" RMX) by Alumetorz and Minato Yukina
written by Ascendance

Minato Yukina returns for this round of Project Loved with one of his patented "Nervous Breakdown" maps, gigadelic! Like most of the Nervous Breakdown series, gigadelic boasts challenging patterns at a fast pace and features classic CLSW patterns that long-time fans of the series will be sure to enjoy. Don't let the comfort of HP5 fool you, though; one miss could be your downfall as you succumb to a downpour of challenging jumps and devastating antiflow. Regardless of the daunting task ahead, you won't want to miss this map!

S.S.H. - Fierce Fight-Remix by Snow Note, DakkyChan, ExGon and inaba-tan
written by SartNYAN OwO xD

Coming in with probably the most unorthodox map of this week's osu!catch loved vote are ExGon and DakkyChan with their collab on Fierce Fight-Remix. With really no other pattern than cross screen jumps and 280BPM left-rights, this map clocks in as a huge challenge for even the very best of players, as you will need some crazy consistency to stay alive on this map. Fierce Fight-Remix definitely also feels like an old school map, for those of us who are into that. So go take it for a spin, perhaps you will discover this style to be very much to your liking!

MONSTA - Holdin' On (Skrillex & Nero Remix) by VelperK
written by Tenshichan

A map which most of the veteran players remember—Holdin' On by VelperK. Back in the days when he submitted this map it was instantly popular among the community and has been played in nearly every multiplayer match. Over the years, it started to disappear slowly; it's about time to bring it back and feel the nostalgia. The mapping style is somewhat timeless; although you can feel that it is older it still doesn't feel too out of place for today's standards. It mostly consists of precise left-right movement paired with a few hyperchains here and there—super general. I believe the majority of the community appreciates this map which makes it a great contender for the loved category. My hope will never die.

a_hisa - Dysthymia by Kyuare
written by SartNYAN OwO xD

As 2017's CWC went into the quarter final's stage, people discovered one of Kyuare's lesser famous (at the time) maps, Dysthymia. This map has tons of variation in streaming patterns, as well as some long-distanced jumps, blended together with Kyuare's well-known triangle-like left-rights. Altogether, this map makes for a very interesting experience on a pretty conventional map. Most active players should be able to pass this map without too many struggles, but pulling off a full combo can prove to be quite difficult with this map's earlier mentioned structure and length.

osu!mania

Kaimar Kube - TRI PALOSKI by Jole
written by Pope Gadget

As with all of Jole's charts, TRI PALOSKI is a barrel of fun. In particular, this chart is a little segue into the world of incredible speed, agility and flexibility. With jumpstreams at a dizzying 330BPM, and unforgiving one-handed trills intertwined, you can battle your friends on the leaderboards to see who really is the best squatter of all time.

sun3 - Morgenglut 2012 by _underjoy
written by TheToaphster

_underjoy, a mapper well known for his additions to the ranked section, brings us Morgenglut 2012, something a bit different from his ranked endeavors. This chart brings the heat with a flurry of long note patterns, going from relatively simple short-LN streaming and trills to near inverse at points, even sometimes bringing in burst streams that reach a blistering 270BPM. Despite this, though, the chart manages to maintain a clear amount of simplicity that gives it a charm that many LN charts lack, and also proves to be a great medium for high level players to test their LN skills.

The chart was also used back in the osu!mania World Cup 2016, a time when long notes and anti-meta was only at the start of its rise in the competitive scene. Given the playstyle's extreme growth over the years following this tournament, and the previous nomination of such charts as Voyage 1970 and Mirage, it only makes sense to add Morgenglut alongside as a nomination to the loved section.

Hommarju feat. mamiko - Katayoku No Tori by Awang411 and Gexigamma
written by _underjoy

One hell of a throwback to early osu!mania days, Awang411's Katayoku No Tori is one of the more well-known mapsets outside of the ranked section. Anyone who plays this game for a longer amount of time has probably either seen or played it, and even now it still can be seen picked in many multiplayer lobbies.

Katayoku No Tori owes its success and popularity to its large accessibility. The mapset contains a wide spread of 4K difficulties, ranging from 1st to 10th Twilight. With each difficulty, the map gets denser and more relentless—while the first Twilights are easily accessible to newcomers who want to try out a fun and fast song, the final Twilights challenge the player with 220BPM jumpstreams and handstreams.

Although from today's perspective the general patterning is rather unrefined and feels odd at times, Katayoku No Tori still retains its charm as the mapset heavily played in the older era of osu!mania. This is why we believe the mapset has earned its place in the Loved category.

Zeami - Music Revolver by Entozer
written by aitor98

Here we have Entozer again with a beautiful but hard beatmapset for Music Revolver. This set features both long note and chordstream difficulties, making it accessible for every kind of player. This map has been popular since the early days of osu!mania, and you can recognize it by the untrustful difficulty name choices, which will likely confuse a lot of players, because who would've ever wondered that a "Normal" difficulty could almost be 7 stars?

Fallen Shepherd ft. RabbiTon Strings - ENDYMION by Blocko and _underjoy
written by _underjoy

As an experienced player, mapper and a former QAT, Blocko is well known in the community and his works are the synonym of the word quality. His mapping style is both very fluent and very flexible, which can be seen in one of his recent mapsets, ENDYMION by Fallen Shepherd ft. RabbiTon Strings, whose Coronation difficulty was picked for the osu!mania 7K World Cup 2018 Finals Mappool.

This mapset utilises the lively and aggressive song very accurately, retaining and developing the same concepts as the difficulty ramps up. The main dish of the harder charts are high density chordstreams with very comfortable patterning, which are accompanied by skillfully placed minijacks. Adding a small amount of long notes as well as repetitively patterned chords, Blocko created a well balanced and enjoyable mapset across all difficulties which feels really natural, and very rewarding to hit. With that being said, we believe that ENDYMION is a perfect pick for the Loved category!

senya - Tsuki ni Murakumo Hana ni Kaze by 17VA et al.
written by aitor98

We've already talked about 17VA and his charts in the past, and this time will not be different at all. Senya – Tsuki ni Murakumo Hana ni Kaze has been around osu!mania since 2015 and it's a nice long note mapset. This map features Genesis, Kawawa and Rumia- as guest mappers and it has patterns such as shields, jacks, irregular long note releases, light chordstreams, and more.

This map has also been used for the osu!mania 7K World Cup 2016 Finals mappool. The difficulty span goes from 2 stars to almost 8, making it a really approachable set for all players. It's definitely worth checking out!

Yooh - LiFE Garden (short Ver.) by pocket-Gao et al.
written by Kamikaze

Our last pick comes from a pretty well-known charter, creator of maps like Violet Soul, pocket-Gao! He is mostly notable for his 8K charts, although this chart, LiFE Garden by Yooh, definitely stands out. This chart is running at 149BPM, and while it's not the highest of tempos, it's fairly difficult technically. Featuring full spreads of 4K and 8K, with guest difficulties by charters such as dosyeru, Critical_Star, Crystal & ExNeko it provides challenge to both newcomers and more advanced players.

It is a classic, really well designed set for a more uncommon keymode and I believe that it's a good candidate for the Loved category!

From everyone on the Project Loved team, we hope you enjoy this week's selection, and look forward to the next! The winning beatmaps will hit the Loved beatmap listing sometime next week and will be announced via @osugame on Twitter.

If you have any suggestions for beatmaps to be added to the Loved category, please submit them using the Google form! You can view the current submissions on the corresponding Google sheet.
